San Sebastian window reflections

I’ve landed in Bilbao, Spain and am taking the bus to San Sebastian. The bus, of course, has free wifi. I love the future!

11 days with 22 litres

I’m headed to Spain this morning to hang out with Cam who’s spending 6 months working in Lasarte-Oria. From there I’m headed east to Marseille to see my brother who’s studying abroad.

Should be a great 11 day trip. I decided to go super light so I’m all packed up into a 22 litre day pack. At first I had a small canvas bag as well since Cam was craving some Adam’s peanut butter. Sadly, it turns out TSA doesn’t like a large glass jar of peanut butter so that didn’t make it past security.

Unitasking. Trent Walton writes about what changes when you force yourself to focus on one task at a time. I’ve had similar experiences when going from my 27″ cinema display to the 11″ Air. Sometimes a smaller screen makes it easier to work, not harder.

I’m pretty sure Daniel’s last three tweets are the future of the hashbang.

The Masked Social Network

Effectively Instapaper has found a way to keep its users engaged with the site’s main purpose, reading, while offering users ways of keeping tabs other readers. It’s like getting a peek at someone else’s bookcase, without them knowing that you peeked.

Imagine what would happen if Twitter operated this way: you have no inkling of who is following you and others have no clue if you are following them. You just have an account that you post to, occasionally a person responds to you. The only way you know if a person is following you is when you go to Direct Message them.

Imagine that, because what would really change?

One Platform to Rule Them All

What I think his vision actually points out, though, is Windows 8′s central problem: it takes no position, it has no central theme or integrity. This isn’t a vision so much as a refusal to choose between fundamentally different user interfaces. Rather, Microsoft decided to combine the PC’s mouse and keyboard-based user interface with the iPad’s touch-based interface and have the best of both worlds.

WordCamp Portland: All about post formats

Today I gave a talk at WordCamp Portland about post formats and how they make your site awesome. The slides are posted below and some handy links are included as well. Enjoy.

The WordPress Codex has some terrific information on what formats are and how they can be implemented in case you need more details after this talk. Ian Stewart also gave a great talk about this at WordCamp San Francisco which I wrote some notes about before.
