Content as Medium:

The industry seemed to assume that it was the very physicality of books, newspapers and magazines that we craved – or that we required in order to comprehend the idea of a digital equivalent. The industry was wrong.

Digital Connection, Language, And Family:

Saying that “online” is a modality means, as many at Cyborgology and elsewhere have argued before, that “being online” is not something that is either on or off, true or false, but always there in varying degrees of attention, intensity, and praxis. It also means that being online is not zero sum with being offline. Pulling out your phone doesn’t flip you over from offline to online. The phone was sending and receiving data while out of sight. Your brain was also aware of the potential for digital communication at a background level.

The Unexotic Underclass:

If you’re an entrepreneur looking for ideas, consider looking beyond the city-centric, navel-gazing, youth-obsessed mainstream. That doesn’t mean you need to fly to the end of the world. Chances are there are more people addressing the Big Problems of slum dwellers in Calcutta, Kibera or Rio, than are tackling the big problems of hardpressed folks in say, West Virginia, Mississippi or Louisiana.

Columbia River Gorge

Columbia River Gorge

The sunny weather this week continued so I drove out the old Columbia River highway with my parents. Nice views.

Picturing Books:

all of these choices—these transpositions we choose when reading— work. They work for us because books do not tender precise images, sounds or smells. Books, like plays, present ideas, and the juxtaposition of ideas. It is the interaction of ideas that catalyzes feeling in us readers.

A long essay that is well worth the read.

Mt. Hood Hiking

Mt. Hood

Took advantage of the wonderful weather yesterday to do a short hike on the Timberline Trail. Topped the day off with a 3-mile run and a delicious homemade dinner. Good Saturday.

Logo, Bullshit & Co., Inc.

This post is not about the technical quality of the logo. I am not writing about brand design, but about brand management. This is about a simple rule: Brand design follows brand management, not the other way around.

The Great Discontent: Frank Chimero. An interview with Frank Chimero about work, design, and what motivates you. I really enjoyed this line from the interview:

I guess that means that design must talk about something else. If you make design about design, you’re just stacking bowls, and that’s not what bowls are for.
