A little truth leaks out

What’s remarkable about [David Frum, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, and Paul Krugman], what gives me hope that there may be a way out of the bigger mess, of which this month’s meltdown is just a sympton, is that finally blogging is effectively routing around MSM. If you want to hear from smart people who know what they’re talking about, and who aren’t spinning, you can.

This is why blogging is important.

Why Google cares if you use your real name

There’s a very simple business reason why Google cares if they have your real name. It means it’s possible to cross-relate your account with your buying behavior with their partners, who might be banks, retailers, supermarkets, hospitals, airlines. To connect with your use of cell phones that might be running their mobile operating system. To provide identity in a commerce-ready way. And to give them information about what you do on the Internet, without obfuscation of pseudonyms.

Simply put, a real name is worth more than a fake one.

No journalism on Facebook

The only thing to add is that it is not possible to do journalism in an environment where your writing can be taken down if the company hosting it deems it offensive.

Got a kick out of Dave Winer’s early April Fools’ joke on Scripting News. “In other words, I like money. Pay me. Now. Or else. :-)”

Why did Twitter suspend UberTwitter? Bill Gross, CEO of UberMedia, gives the background of why Twitter suspended UberTwitter, UberCurrent, and Twidroyd. Ruh oh, time to watch out for the gulag.

RSS keeps me alive and kickin’

Dave Winer has been on a serious win streak for the last few days. On the 4th he defined what an open web means to him. If your web has silos then it isn’t really your web is it?

Then he talked about “A tool whose only output is a set of RSS feeds.” Which sounds like a lovely loosely coupled network. That’s a tool I’d want to use and experiment with.

Finally he weaves RSS, iPads, WYSIWYG editors, and a river of news into a tale of why first impressions are sometimes the most honest but are many times blatantly wrong.

It’s all as Seth Godin says,

RSS is quiet and fast and professional and largely hype-free. Perhaps that’s why it’s not the flavor of the day.

Flavor of the day or not it’s how I consume the vast majority of my news and it alone has radically transformed my consumption of information and acquisition of knowledge. So thank you Dave Winer and all the other developers who have contributed to keeping RSS thriving. 🙂

Dave Winer’s network nirvana

Dave Winer describes having FIOS installed in the East Village after his move:

Do you find that network installers hate to leave when the job is done? It always goes the same way at my house. When they walk in, they’re bored and don’t say much. When they finally see how my system is hooked up, they realize that I’ve got the nirvana they dream of.

Leo Laporte – Buzz Kill

Leo Laporte is back to writing on his blog:

I should have been posting it here all along. Had I been doing so I’d have something to show for it. A record of my life for the last few years at the very least. But I ignored my blog and ran off with the sexy, shiny microblogs. Well no more. I’m sorry for having neglected you Leoville.
