Barcelona

View from La Pedrera.

Last month we took a break from the dreary, January weather in Portland and spent 9 days in Barcelona. While it was my second trip to the city, the first one was for work and I had a cold for much of the week. The weather turned out to be exactly what we’d hoped for: 50+ and mostly sunny.

One of the nice parts about visiting in mid-January is that it’s way off-season. A lot of places were empty and even crowded places were manageable. We had no problem just deciding day-of what we wanted to do most days.

One of the highlights was going hot air ballooning north of the city in Vic. It was a lot colder than we anticipated but the views and experience were fantastic. You can see the Pyrenees peaking out from just under the cloud line.

We also spent time in La Sagrada Família. The light was as amazing as I remember and we were fortunate that for much of the first hour there weren’t more than a few dozen people around.

Toward the end of the week we took the train out to the abbey at Montserrat. The abbey itself is interesting but what really makes the experience are the rock formations around. The path down to the hillside cave was deserted and we had the space to ourselves.

We took it at a pretty relaxed pace over the 9 days so we left ourselves with plenty to do on a return trip. Already looking forward to it!

Leaving San Sebastián today and taking the bus to Bilbao. Will probably check out the Guggenheim and then catch some sleep before a 7am flight to Marseille tomorrow.

San Sebastián & Idiazabal – Travel Log, Days 2 & 3

My second day in Spain was spent wandering around San Sebastián and Lasarte with Cam. In the morning we took a hike through the beautiful countryside outside Lasarte.

After that we headed back into San Sebastián and wandered around the streets. The city has a terrific blend of architecture and beach scenery. The old town center is filled with bars, cafes, and anything else you can imagine.

We hung out on the beach for a few hours and then Cam and Marco, the other BasqueStage, had a live chat with prospective applicants for next year’s program. From there we hit some pintxos bars which were delicious.

Today we went out to Idiazabal to see how the Aranburu brothers make their award-winning cheese.1

The cheese was fantastic. It had a nice mild flavour that wasn’t overpowering and was wonderfully delicious.

After cheese we drove up to the mountains a bit and took a short hike around a reservoir. We then went out for lunch at Zezilionea. We split three appetizers and then had a main course plus dessert. Quite the memorable meal.

Huge thanks to Andoni for making today possible.2 He’s fantastic and was a perfect guide for today. It was truly unique.

  1. Running into random WordPress users also makes me happy too. Check the source of the site. 🙂
  2. He’s also a WordPress user. It’s a crazy small world.

San Sebastián – Travel Log, Day 1

20+ hours in airports filled yesterday but it was all worth it. I got into San Sebastián around 2:30pm and was meeting up with Cam at 7 so I had some time to kill.

I headed down to old town and then up to the top of Castillo de Santa Cruz de la Mota. From the top you got some terrific views of the harbor and beaches below.

The castle peninsula splits the two beaches in San Sebastián. Both are gorgeous beaches with surprisingly warm water for the Atlantic. The beach to the left of the castle also has some pretty decent surfing.

There are also a few sail boats and smaller motorized ones going around the harbor. It looks like an awesome place to enjoy some sailing. Will have to wait for next time.

More photos to come later but that’s a taste for now.

I’ve landed in Bilbao, Spain and am taking the bus to San Sebastian. The bus, of course, has free wifi. I love the future!

11 days with 22 litres

I’m headed to Spain this morning to hang out with Cam who’s spending 6 months working in Lasarte-Oria. From there I’m headed east to Marseille to see my brother who’s studying abroad.

Should be a great 11 day trip. I decided to go super light so I’m all packed up into a 22 litre day pack. At first I had a small canvas bag as well since Cam was craving some Adam’s peanut butter. Sadly, it turns out TSA doesn’t like a large glass jar of peanut butter so that didn’t make it past security.
