I’m outside of Granite Falls, WA this week in a lovely Airbnb that overlooks Canyon Creek (which is roaring right now). Clear weather today meant it was time for a hike.

Heather Lake is a short-but-steep trail with a great view at the end. I only wish I’d gotten an earlier start to catch the lake before the sun was above the ridgeline.

This time of year the path up is half trail, half creek. You either get wet feet or hop a bit from rock to rock. I bailed on the loop around the lake as there were some deep spots that would have made the hike home a wet one.

Forested hikes are great as, at least in this case, the further from the road I got the more old growth trees there were.1 At the bottom of the ridge there were just stumps. Massive, massive stumps (with trees of their own growing out of them), but stumps nonetheless. I’m glad the loggers of old looked up the slope and figured some trees weren’t worth felling.

  1. For a great historical novel on the lumber industry of the Pacific Northwest I highly recommend Deep River. ā†©ļøŽ
