I flew to Tokyo a week early for this year’s State of the Word. This was my second time spending a long stretch there and it was fun to both revisit some spots and see new parts of the city.

It felt perhaps unseasonably warm and even with the late month there was still color left in gardens. Hama-rikyū Gardens is one of my favorite spots with how it sits between the water and city.

teamLab was a highlight, though hard to describe and worth caveating: there are two in Tokyo and I only recommend Borderless. Get a ticket for entry as they open and it can be a lovely experience wandering through the rooms. The scripted and crowded exhibits at teamLab Planets didn’t click for me in the same way.

This time around I got to the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum which is such a cool spot. It’s a hike from central Tokyo (an hour plus by train) but worth it. I love this kind of architecture and I could have happily pulled up a chair and read all day in any of the homes. If you go, there’s a great little ramen place back toward the JR line station.
