After 8 hours roundtrip in the car on Friday we have keys to our quiet, countryside life. We move this week, which will entail, all told, another 12 hours of driving for me. Once settled, we plan to enjoy this view out the front windows for many years to come. Friday was a grey, rainy day that left us excited for what the land will look like throughout the year.

I plan to keep loose notes on what we learn (hence the post title) as we go from life in the city to life far away from anything. While this much land and this level of remoteness is similar to how I grew up, I nonetheless appreciate the lovely head start we got from the property’s prior owner, who left us tons of notes. We know there’s plenty we don’t know; that’s part of the fun!

After we walked through the house we went to check on the chickens. They were…skeptical of us, to say the least. If chickens could shout, “Well who the heck are you?!” then that’s the reception we got. The large-and-very-much-in-charge rooster (because of course there’s a rooster…) had plenty of commentary. I will win his affection with a shared predilection for rising at 4:00am.

Here’s to a 2026 of new adventures and truly astounding levels of quiet. The silence of remote land is welcome.
