We had a week of idyllic weather. Other than a couple of windless days (and thus, midges) it was blue skies, wisps of clouds, and a steady breeze. There’s a part of me that still feels the need to take advantage of weather like this before the summer heat arrives. And then I remember that it’s not going to be boiling hot come August!

Across the lane is forestry land, the roads of which make for excellent running routes. When I get out early I see hares around the paths. We have some closer to home, too, as the last few mornings and twilights they’ve hopped around the property. They’re welcome gardeners as their favorite dish seems to be dandelion greens. Chow down little rabbit! Our resident hares appear to be a pair and quite young (and adorable).

All the good weather has meant our crops are thriving. The 4 apple trees have all blossomed and appear to be set for a fruitful season. The tomatoes are getting flowers and have grown a few feet high already.

And the kale, my goodness the kale. We planted just one bed of it and we already need to harvest some every few days. This was our first collection, which got cooked up with some steak and sweet potatoes. The next night we picked more to go into a chicken soup. All of it was delicious. Pro tip: don’t get so excited that you have your first homegrown veggies that you forget to shake and rinse them off before you bring them inside! Touché little green aphids, touché.
