I ran across this book after listening to Paul on the Tim Ferriss podcast. What hooked me ended up being Paul’s key argument in the book.
It focuses on how to approach transformative experiences in your life, which Paul defines as situations that change who you are and, in the process, change your preferences or knowledge. Within this concept I learned two useful frameworks:
- Epistemic transformation: an experience that teaches you something you could not have learned without having that experience.
- Personal transformation: an experience that can change who you are and radically change your point of view.
Transformative experiences are those in which is both conditions are true. A classic example that Paul writes about is the decision of whether to have kids or not. She tries to present a framework of how to make those decisions in an authentic way.
Paul writes that in these situations, “the best response…is to choose based on whether we want to discover who we’ll become.” That’s such a beautiful and freeing concept. It removes pressure to over-analyze and encourages you toward personal growth and exploration.
